Magna-Catalogs 2018 Enhancements
Below is a list of new components added to our growing list of Magna-Catalogs. To learn the icon color definition, please view the “Magna-Catalog User Guide here.
Key enhancements included in 2018 are the debut of three new types of Magna-Catalogs; “Service-Orientated”, “Dynamic”, and “LEAN” . These new types are a departure from the standard Magna-Catalogs that primarily host design and modeling features and tools.
“Service-Oriented” catalogs provide quick access to support resources and services directly from the IronCAD/Inovate design UI allowing users to access these resources without the need to leave the software. The aim is to provide the user a streamlined, convenient and basically a repository of support solutions within the design UI with a simple drag of the mouse. The first such catalog is entitled “Mag-RESOURCES” which provides drag and drop access to community forums, Magnacad support department, blogs, online resources such as training and additional support media. It’s our intention by providing a catalog of resources directly from the design user interface, the IronCAD/Inovate user will become more apt to utilize the available resources more effectively thus improving their proficiency in the application.
“Dynamic” catalogs are intended to provide more advanced components and assembly of components pre-configured to take advantage of various advanced functionality found in the IronCAD/Inovate software. The first catalog launched in this release with such capabilities is “Mag-MECHANISMS”. It actually provides a two-fold set of functionality. The first being a library of simple mechanisms that can be used with IronCAD’s mechanism mode straight from the catalog without any setup or configuration required. The intention is to provide a launch pad to support machine design where mechanisms are required extensively. The second is additionally integrated third party CAD software to support the design of mechanisms that can be imported into IronCAD/Inovate to use as design guides for mechanisms.
“LEAN” catalogs have been started to build on a larger initiative to provide catalogs aimed at the art of repair and maintenance design. These will provide common components used in the repair or maintenance of your product. Anyone who has had to repair a machine by replacing a part and realizing they cannot get a tool in the area to unscrew a bolt will appreciate these “LEAN” catalogs. The first incarnation in this release are 3/8″ drive sockets both SAE and Metric that provide dimensional reference for needed clearances.
In keeping with our roots, we have also enhanced many existing Magna-Catalogs to continually improve the design experience. Notably we have added more intelligent features, components, and even whimsical models for hobbyists. We look forward to hearing from customers for feedback on this one since we have some ideas on how to make them better in future releases. Rememeber these catalogs have been developed strictly from feedback from our customers, so keep the feedback coming.

A collection of common handles for furniture and machines. Two of the more advanced models are outlined below:
U-Handle Variant Model
New variant model for a U-Shaped handles. You can use the variations on drop or alter the parameters to enter your own values. Of course you can expand to include your own design variations. Also included for IronCAD Mechanical users are the embedded links to website technical data thru the “Open Attachment” option
Rail Handle Variant Model
New variant model for a Rail Handles. You can use the variations on drop or alter the parameters to enter your own values. Of course you can expand to include your own design variations. Added for 2018 is a new mechanisms catalog that provides a launch pad for simple mechanisms in your design. The included mechanisms are pre-configured to use with IronCAD’s Mechanism mode by dragging the GREEN part in the assembly.
Also included is Linkage is a free computer aided design program used for quick prototyping of linkage mechanisms. The number of operations needed to add a link and get it connected to other links in the mechanism has been minimized to the lowest number possible, making this program ideal for “throwing together” a working machine. The mechanism is edited and animated in the same window allowing for quick analysis and modification while working on a design. It is simplistic for a CAD program but that is the intent.
As an example, you can napkin sketch your linkage in the software, run a animated test and when you’re confident your design is complete export to a DXF file. From IronCAD you can import the DXF as a template to drag and drop linkages for alignment and constraining to be used in Mechanism mode. We have made arrangements with the developer of this software that allows us to integrate it as a catalog component for IronCAD and INOVATE users.
Streamlined UI improvements
The layout of catalog was improved to be more easy to use and find features. Added sub-groups: “Add”, “Subtract”, “Decorative”, and “Videos” for better organization and easier usage.
Also to help visual quality’s reverted the standard IronCAD shapes to original names.
“Ring Groove” variant Intellishape
We added design variations to the Ring Groove intellishape to allow users to customize to their specific needs. VIDEO>
Removed “ic_Bar” shape
We decided to removed the “ic_Bar” shape because its too similar to “ic_Block” shape and therefore redundant.
“H Block Away” shape
This shape simply allows you to remove geometry off the dragged on face for easier cleanup. VIDEO>
“Block” Variable Orientations
We have added some standard Block shapes that orientation themselves to a specific X.Y, or Z axis. The (3) added are W=y, W=x, and H=y. The first letter indicates the Sizebox handle and the second letter indicates the coordinate axis it will align to. For instance, the W=y when dropped into a blank scene with have the “W” Sizebox handles aligned with the Y axis. This is ideal for starting new parts when you want to have the handles in a more logically coordinate manner. VIDEO>
“Bullet” and “H Bullet” Shape
We have added a new “Bullet” and “H Bullet” to either add or subtract respectively. The Bullet shape is basically a capped cylinder that will automatically maintain the full radius cap when diameter is resized. VIDEO>
We have added a new “ExNext1” shape that will extrude a block feature in the forward direction to the next available face that intersects with it. If you enlarge feature enough to bypass the original target face, it will extrude to the next available face blocking its path. VIDEO>

A new group with nautical type components. Included in this release is a “Buoy” and “Life Preserver”.
New 3/8″ Drive SAE Socket Variant Model

New 3/8″ Drive METRIC Socket Variant Model
Added is a new 3/8″ Drive METRIC Socket Variant model that uses design variation sizes from 6mm thru 24mm. Included are standard sockets as well as deep well sockets. These are ideal to determine clearances in your designs for proper maintenance or repair access.
This component will be part of future “LEAN” specific Magna-catalogs. “LEAN” catalogs have been started to build on a larger initiative to provide catalogs aimed at the art of repair and maintenance design.
Updated “Square Tubing” to include design variations an rebranded “Hot Roll Tube-Square”
We updated the 1″ Square Tubing Steel” to be a a variant model using design variations from 1/2″ thru 1-1/2″ Square Tubing.
“0-RESOURCES” sub-group added.
We have included the new catalog “Mag-RESOURCES” as a new sub-group in the Mag-TOOLS catalog. It is a collection of customer resources for easy access to advanced catalogs, blogs, forum, and more. You can even renew your support contracts if so desired.
Additional Screws with Standard ANSI Hole Assembly Features.
Added to the sub group “0-FASTENERS” are additional ANSI screws with their standard fit clearance hole assembly feature. #4, and #6 added. Also the icons updated for better clarity. The hole AF has the proper drill size callout and dimensions. You can edit the screw length and type same as you would normally in IronCAD products.
The “Mag-TEXS” catalog have been updated to correct some issues.
The “Mag-CASTERS” has been updated with more components.
The “Mag-GLASSES” has been updated with more components.
